AC Running, But No Air Coming Out?
You can hear the system running, but the vents feel like nothing's blowing through them. Six common causes — from a clogged filter to a failed blower motor. We'll walk through what to check yourself and when it's time to call.
Why Your Vents Aren't Producing Air
An AC that's running but barely pushing air is almost always one of six things. The good news: half are DIY fixes you can knock out in a few minutes.
Clogged Air Filter
The most common cause — full stop. A filter that's coated in dust acts like a closed door for your AC. The system can't pull enough air through to circulate it. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, that's almost certainly the issue.
DIY FixClosed or Blocked Vents
Walk through every room. Furniture pushed against a register, drapes hanging over a vent, a couch sitting on the floor return — any of these chokes airflow. Closed registers in unused rooms also create back-pressure that hurts the whole system.
DIY FixTripped Blower Breaker
Your AC has two breakers — one for the outdoor condenser, one for the indoor blower. If only the blower breaker tripped, the outdoor unit still runs but no air moves. Check your electrical panel for any breaker that's in the middle (or flipped to "off").
DIY FixFrozen Evaporator Coil
When the indoor coil freezes solid, ice blocks airflow completely — you hear the system running but feel nothing. Caused by low refrigerant or restricted airflow (from cause #1 or #2). Turn the AC off and let it thaw before doing anything else.
Tap to Call a TechFailed Blower Motor or Capacitor
The blower fan is what physically moves air through your ducts. If its motor or start capacitor fails, the system thinks it's running normally but the fan isn't actually spinning. You may hear a hum from the indoor unit but no whoosh of air.
Tap to Call a TechDuct Leaks or Disconnections
Sometimes the air is moving — it's just escaping into your attic or crawlspace instead of reaching your rooms. Hidden duct disconnections can lose 30%+ of conditioned air. Common in older Metro Detroit homes that have had remodels over the decades.
Tap to Call a TechTry These 4 Things Before Calling
The first three causes above are usually quick fixes. Walk through these in order — if any of them solve it, you just saved yourself a service call.
Replace the Air Filter
If it's grey or dusty, it's the problem. New filter takes 30 seconds and fixes 60%+ of weak-airflow calls.
Walk Every Room
Open all supply vents fully. Move furniture, drapes, rugs blocking returns. Check basement and attic registers too.
Reset the Blower Breaker
Find the indoor air handler breaker. Flip it fully OFF for 60 seconds, then back on. Listen for the blower to start.
Look for Ice
Check the indoor coil or refrigerant lines. If you see frost or ice anywhere — shut the AC OFF and call. Don't keep running it.

Don't Keep Running It With No Airflow
When the AC runs without proper airflow, two bad things happen: the coil can freeze solid (turning a small fix into a big one), and the blower motor can overheat (a small repair becomes a major one). If the DIY checks above don't restore airflow, shut it off and call.
What Happens When We Show Up
No mystery. No high-pressure upsells. Just licensed Michigan techs, real diagnostics, and an honest quote before any work begins.
Airflow Measurement
We measure static pressure and CFM at the supply, return, and at each register to pinpoint where the airflow is being lost.
Component Check
Filter, coil, blower motor, capacitor, ducts — we test each link in the chain until we find the failure point.
Up-Front Quote
You see the price before we touch a tool. No surprise charges, no "while we're in there" upsells.
Same-Day Repair
Most airflow fixes happen on the spot — we carry blower motors, capacitors, and duct repair supplies on the truck.
We Quote Repairs On-Site
A clogged filter and a failed blower motor both cause the same "no air" symptom — but one is a free fix and the other is a real repair. That's why we come out, run a real diagnostic, and quote you face-to-face. No phone-quoted bait-and-switches.
Stop Tracking Filter Dates and Vent Blocks
Most weak-airflow calls trace back to a missed filter swap, a coil that needs cleaning, or a duct that came loose during a remodel. Our $5/mo NEXT Care Plan covers two yearly tune-ups where we handle all of it — coil cleaning, airflow measurement, duct inspection, filter replacement. Catch it before it costs you summer comfort.
