AC Repair No Air Flow

AC Running, But No Air Coming Out?

You can hear the system running, but the vents feel like nothing's blowing through them. Six common causes — from a clogged filter to a failed blower motor. We'll walk through what to check yourself and when it's time to call.

Top 6 Causes

Why Your Vents Aren't Producing Air

An AC that's running but barely pushing air is almost always one of six things. The good news: half are DIY fixes you can knock out in a few minutes.

1

Clogged Air Filter

The most common cause — full stop. A filter that's coated in dust acts like a closed door for your AC. The system can't pull enough air through to circulate it. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, that's almost certainly the issue.

2

Closed or Blocked Vents

Walk through every room. Furniture pushed against a register, drapes hanging over a vent, a couch sitting on the floor return — any of these chokes airflow. Closed registers in unused rooms also create back-pressure that hurts the whole system.

DIY Fix
3

Tripped Blower Breaker

Your AC has two breakers — one for the outdoor condenser, one for the indoor blower. If only the blower breaker tripped, the outdoor unit still runs but no air moves. Check your electrical panel for any breaker that's in the middle (or flipped to "off").

4

Frozen Evaporator Coil

When the indoor coil freezes solid, ice blocks airflow completely — you hear the system running but feel nothing. Caused by low refrigerant or restricted airflow (from cause #1 or #2). Turn the AC off and let it thaw before doing anything else.

5

Failed Blower Motor or Capacitor

The blower fan is what physically moves air through your ducts. If its motor or start capacitor fails, the system thinks it's running normally but the fan isn't actually spinning. You may hear a hum from the indoor unit but no whoosh of air.

6

Duct Leaks or Disconnections

Sometimes the air is moving — it's just escaping into your attic or crawlspace instead of reaching your rooms. Hidden duct disconnections can lose 30%+ of conditioned air. Common in older Metro Detroit homes that have had remodels over the decades.

Try These 4 Things Before Calling

The first three causes above are usually quick fixes. Walk through these in order — if any of them solve it, you just saved yourself a service call.

1

Replace the Air Filter

If it's grey or dusty, it's the problem. New filter takes 30 seconds and fixes 60%+ of weak-airflow calls.

2

Walk Every Room

Open all supply vents fully. Move furniture, drapes, rugs blocking returns. Check basement and attic registers too.

3

Reset the Blower Breaker

Find the indoor air handler breaker. Flip it fully OFF for 60 seconds, then back on. Listen for the blower to start.

4

Look for Ice

Check the indoor coil or refrigerant lines. If you see frost or ice anywhere — shut the AC OFF and call. Don't keep running it.

None of these worked? Call (844) 279-HVAC — we'll have someone out today.

Don't Keep Running It With No Airflow

When the AC runs without proper airflow, two bad things happen: the coil can freeze solid (turning a small fix into a big one), and the blower motor can overheat (a small repair becomes a major one). If the DIY checks above don't restore airflow, shut it off and call.

How NEXT Fixes It

What Happens When We Show Up

No mystery. No high-pressure upsells. Just licensed Michigan techs, real diagnostics, and an honest quote before any work begins.

1

Airflow Measurement

We measure static pressure and CFM at the supply, return, and at each register to pinpoint where the airflow is being lost.

2

Component Check

Filter, coil, blower motor, capacitor, ducts — we test each link in the chain until we find the failure point.

3

Up-Front Quote

You see the price before we touch a tool. No surprise charges, no "while we're in there" upsells.

4

Same-Day Repair

Most airflow fixes happen on the spot — we carry blower motors, capacitors, and duct repair supplies on the truck.

Honest Pricing

We Quote Repairs On-Site

A clogged filter and a failed blower motor both cause the same "no air" symptom — but one is a free fix and the other is a real repair. That's why we come out, run a real diagnostic, and quote you face-to-face. No phone-quoted bait-and-switches.

FAQ

No-Airflow Questions

The most common reasons are a clogged air filter, closed or blocked vents, a tripped blower breaker, a frozen evaporator coil, a failing blower motor or capacitor, or duct leaks. The first three are quick DIY fixes. The last three need a tech.
Yes — and it's the #1 cause we see. A filter coated in dust acts like a closed door. The blower can't pull enough air through to circulate it. Worse, the restricted airflow can freeze the evaporator coil, which blocks airflow even more. Swap the filter and you fix both problems.
Uneven airflow usually means a duct issue — a disconnected duct, a kinked flex duct, or a closed damper somewhere. Common in older Mount Clemens and Sterling Heights homes that have had remodels. Less commonly it's a balance issue from oversized supply runs to certain rooms.
It depends on the motor type (standard PSC, ECM, variable-speed) and your specific system. We don't quote it over the phone because the wrong motor in your unit will cause more problems than the original. We diagnose on-site, confirm the part match, and quote face-to-face.
Not for long. Restricted airflow causes two things: the evaporator coil can freeze (turning a small repair into a big one), and the blower motor can overheat (same problem). If a filter swap and vent check don't fix it, shut the AC off and call.
Weak AND warm usually means a frozen evaporator coil. Ice on the coil blocks both cooling and airflow. Shut the AC off, set the fan to "ON" so room air helps thaw it, and wait 2–3 hours. If it freezes again after that, you've got a refrigerant or airflow problem that needs a tech.
