Thermostat Not Responding?
Sometimes the AC is perfectly fine and the thermostat is the actual problem. The good news: about half of these calls are dead batteries or a tripped breaker — quick wins you can knock out yourself. Here's how to tell.
How Long Does a Thermostat Last?
Lifespan depends entirely on the type. The older the technology, the longer it lasts — but the less it does for you.
Quick check: If your thermostat is more than 10 years old and acting up, replacement is often cheaper than repair. We carry common replacement units on the truck.
What's the Thermostat Doing?
The behavior you're seeing points to which kind of fix you need. Find your symptom below.
Pick the pattern that best describes what you're seeing on the thermostat.
Display Is Blank or Dim
Power problem. The thermostat isn't getting electricity. Almost always a quick fix.
- Dead batteries (most common)
- Tripped furnace/air-handler breaker
- Blown low-voltage fuse on the control board
- Wires loose at the thermostat base
Display Works, AC Won't Respond
Control problem. The thermostat is on but isn't telling the AC to run. Could be settings, wiring, or the unit itself.
- Wrong mode (Heat / Fan / Off instead of Cool)
- Setpoint above current temp
- Bad wiring between thermostat and air handler
- Failed thermostat sensor or unit
Smart Thermostat Acting Up
Connectivity or power problem. Smart thermostats need both wifi AND continuous low-voltage power (usually via C-wire). Issues here are common.
- Wifi signal weak or disconnected
- Missing or faulty C-wire
- App permissions or account issues
- Firmware update needed or failed
The 6 Real Thermostat Issues
Each problem has a specific fix path. The first three are quick DIY wins.
Dead Batteries
The #1 thermostat call we get. LCD goes dim, blank, or just flat-out won't respond. Many programmable thermostats run entirely off batteries.
Swap the AA or AAA Batteries
Pop off the cover, swap the cells, snap it back. Use alkaline (not rechargeables) and replace both at once. 60-second fix.
Wrong Mode or Setpoint
System mode somehow got changed to "Heat" or "Fan" or "Off." Or the setpoint is above room temp so the AC has no reason to run.
Set Cool, Lower the Temp
Mode: COOL. Setpoint: below the current room reading. Listen for the AC to kick on within 60 seconds.
Tripped Breaker
The thermostat gets its low-voltage power from the air handler or furnace. If that breaker tripped, the thermostat goes dark.
Reset the Indoor-Unit Breaker
Find the breaker labeled "furnace" or "air handler." Flip it fully OFF for 60 seconds, then back on. Watch the thermostat for power return.
Blown Control-Board Fuse
The air handler's control board has a small low-voltage fuse (usually 3 or 5 amp) that protects the thermostat circuit. A short trips it.
Find Cause, Replace Fuse
Replacing the fuse without finding the short means it blows again immediately. We trace it: pinched wire, bad contactor coil, or fault at the outdoor unit.
Missing C-Wire
Smart thermostats need continuous power. Old homes were wired without a "C" (common) wire because old mechanical thermostats didn't need one. Smart units then "battery-cycle" themselves and act flaky.
Add C-Wire or Use Adapter
Two options: pull a new C-wire from the air handler (cleanest), or install a C-wire adapter at the control board. Either way, smart thermostat gets consistent power.
Failed Thermostat Unit
After 10-15+ years (more for digital, less for smart), the unit itself fails. Sensors drift, relays stick, display dies. Replacement is the only real fix.
Replace With Modern Unit
We can replace with a like-for-like programmable thermostat or upgrade to a smart unit (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell). Same-day installation, full system test before we leave.
Every Major Thermostat Brand — Repair or Replace
Whatever's on your wall, we can troubleshoot, repair, or swap it. Common brands we stock and service:
Google Nest
Nest Learning & Nest E. Common C-wire issues we resolve regularly. Full setup, wifi pairing, app onboarding.
Ecobee
Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control, Ecobee3 Lite. Sensors, geofencing, and app integration.
Honeywell / Resideo
T-series smart, Vision Pro programmable, classic round dial. The most common brand in Michigan homes — we stock parts for all of them.
Sensi by Emerson
Sensi Touch, Sensi Wi-Fi. Often the value pick when upgrading from a basic programmable.
Bryant Evolution
Communicating systems with Bryant Evolution Connex. Requires manufacturer-specific diagnostics and wiring.
Carrier Côr
Carrier Côr and Infinity touch-screen systems. Connected to the equipment over proprietary protocol.
Trane ComfortLink
ComfortLink II and XL series. We work with Trane dealers' diagnostic protocols and parts catalogs.
Old Round Dials & More
Mercury-tube thermostats, vintage Honeywells, off-brand programmables — if it's on a Michigan wall, we know it.
Smart Thermostat Upgrade — On the House?
Care Plan members get 10% off any thermostat upgrade and the install labor is included with the spring tune-up if you book them together. A new Nest or Ecobee can pay for itself in heating-cooling savings within 18 months — especially in our climate.
We Quote Thermostat Work On-Site
A bad capacitor on the control board, a missing C-wire install, and a full smart-thermostat upgrade are wildly different jobs. That's why we come out, diagnose, and quote face-to-face. No phone-quoted bait-and-switches.
